Sunscreen Guide for Oily and Acne Prone Skin

Our tips for choosing the right sunscreen
Sunscreen Guide for Oily and Acne Prone Skin

We all know that sunscreen is non-negotiable when it comes to protecting our skin from the harmful effects of UV rays and early signs of ageing, however it can be daunting to use for those with oily and acne prone skin. Rest assured, there is a sunscreen for every skin type, and we are here to explain the importance of finding the right one for you!

Firstly, let’s unpack why some people have more oily skin than others. Oily skin is the result of sebum, a substance that is produced by our sebaceous glands to protect and hydrate our skin. Everybody produces this substance,  however some people can overproduce sebum which can result in inflammation, clogged pores and overall oily skin.

Whilst some believe that sun exposure can be good for ‘drying out’ oily skin to help prevent breakouts, this is a myth. Not only can it leave your skin more susceptible to melanoma and premature ageing, but sun exposure also darkens pigmentation, which can result in more prominent acne scarring.

Our tips for choosing the right sunscreen for oily skin:

Check the Ingredients

It’s a common misconception that the active ingredients in sunscreen are the cause of breakouts. However, it is often the additional ingredients that are the root of the problem, such as preservatives, fragrances and emollients. Oil-free sunscreens are a great option to avoid adding excess oil to your skin.

Some additional ingredients can however aid the skin and prevent irritation, look for sunscreens that contain soothing ingredients such as vitamin E and glycerin which will keep your skin hydrated. You can read more information on the benefits of glycerin here.

Our SPF50+ Sunscreen Range consists of products for your face and body, and are enriched with vitamin E, glycerin and aloe vera to soothe, hydrate and protect your skin. They are also fragrance free to help avoid irritation.

Use a Foundation or BB Cream with Added SPF

SPF should be applied to your face every day, so using makeup that contains SPF is convenient in ensuring that your skin is protected from the sun. It can also help to prevent your pores from becoming blocked after using multiple products. Plus, the mineral pigments provide the added bonus of blurring imperfections and evening out your skin tone!

Many BB creams also include skin-loving ingredients that can assist in hydrating your skin and minimising the appearance of fine lines. The Bali Body BB Cream with SPF15 is enriched with green tea, hyaluronic acid and marine collagen to rejuvenate and renew the skin. It's lighter than a foundation but provides more coverage and benefits than a tinted moisturiser, and it’s ideal for all skin types!

Opt for a Sunscreen with a Matte Finish

Often the finish of face products is a consideration when choosing a foundation, and matte finishes are usually the choice of those with oily skin to prevent the appearance of an oily t-zone. This is also relevant with sunscreens!

Choosing a sunscreen with a lightweight formula that is fast-absorbing and provides a matte finish will assist in absorbing any excess oil and won’t leave your face looking greasy.

Try our Hydrating Face Sunscreen which is a hydrating and lightweight fluid formula that leaves you with a non-greasy, matte finish! Plus its SPF50+ to give you maximum protection.

Those with oily skin are more susceptible to environmental factors causing skin irritation and acne, whilst sunscreen can contribute to this, it's not a reason to skip protecting your skin with proper UV protection.

Research is key to ensuring you pick the best sunscreen for your skin type.
